Health
Professions Scholarship Program
The
Dr. Bert and Lucille Wiley Memorial Health Professions Scholarship
Program is a great opportunity for students and residents of Bedford
County. Through the generous donations of the late Dr. Bert and
Lucille Wiley, the Memorial Hospital of Bedford County (MHBC)
Foundation has funds to provide scholarships for students entering
health profession studies. The Education Committee of the MHBC
Foundation has been challenged to select applicants that have
a justified need, ability to excel in and complete a health professions
program, and dedication to serve the profession, patients and
coworkers. A minimum of one scholarship will be awarded each year.
The current
scholarship amount is $8,000 (maximum) annually for up to four
(4) years. The funds may only be used for tuition, books, and/or
uniforms.
The following
qualifications are necessary for scholarship consideration:
- Resident
of Bedford County (minimum 1 year full time residency.)
- Notification
of acceptance into an actual health professions program of study.
Pre-program, undeclared, and division of undergraduate studies
acceptance do not qualify. (Students may apply any year during
their course of study.)
- Verification
of financial need.
- Two (2)
letters of recommendation from high school teachers, post-secondary
faculty, or employers. One of the two letters of recommendation
for current college or university students must be submitted
from faculty.
- Maintain
a grade point average of 3.0 and maintain continuous enrollment
as a full-time student. A transcript must be submitted at the
end of each semester for the Scholarship Committee to review
the student's academic progress.
The student
must successfully complete any licensure or certification examination
required for the specific health profession. Also, if selected
as an employee of UPMC Bedford Memorial, the recipient must serve
creditably. The student agrees to return to work at UPMC Bedford
Memorial for three (3) consecutive years following completion
of the program.
If the recipient
fails to complete the health professions program or does not fulfill
the above stated agreement to return for employment, the amount
of scholarship funds used must be repaid to the hospital in full
within 30 days of termination of the agreement. Should work at
UPMC Bedford Memorial not be available, the repayment obligation
is waived by the hospital.
Hospital
employees are eligible to apply for the scholarship in lieu of
tuition reimbursement. If you have questions about the scholarship
program, contact
the Foundation Scholarship Coordinator or e-mail
us. You may also download the Health Professions Scholarship
